Evaluation: Forms and Conventions
My magazine's genre is "Indie" this is short for Independent rock which is a type of alternative rock music and is associated mostly with bands such as The Killers, The Kooks and The Wombats. The conventions for an Indie magazine are usually very "anti-glossy" and ensure that they do not follow a stylish look about them as this would not reflect the genre of the music well in the style of the magazine. They usually interview unsigned acts, rock bands, alternative rock and punk bands, there are also a lot of posters in these sorts of magazines and gig reviews, guides etc. There are not really any Indie magazines around that I have seen but the closest I can find are rock magazines such as Kerrang!, Classic Rock and Rolling Stone. I have followed a few conventions from Kerrang! but I have challenged some of the conventions as some of my designs are quite stylish looking and give quite a bold statement with colours or even more so the lack of colour. I think my magazine would fill a gap in the market because as I have mentioned before there doesn't appear to be any Indie magazines around and this magazine is a mixture of the new Indie scene with features and conventions of a rock magazine but with a twist so that it isn't confused as just a straight forward rock magazine. Firstly my magazine is called "Versatile" and I chose this based upon it's definition: competent in many areas and able to turn with ease from one thing to another and also having great diversity which is something I wanted to represent through my magazine. My front cover has a lot of regular conventions such as, a masthead, cover lines, bar code and tag lines. I added in a tag line at the top of the magazine cover which has "The best selling Indie Music Magazine in the UK" this is to show the magazine as being popular and with the magazine appearing as being popular and also being an "Indie" magazine sales should be quite high as it fills a gap in the market and as it also appears to sell well. The front cover has a black sketchy front for the masthead, I didn't want to use a font that looked like bubble writing or a serif front because they haven't got the same style to fit in with the magazine theme. At the side of the masthead there is a graphic which I have edited to look like a sticker, it also shows the price at being £2.00 and this would grab the audiences (the audience is generally student aged) attention because it is a low price for a monthly music magazine. I used the same masthead font for the cover lines but this time I used pink for the font colour this is because pink and black connote punk and also they do work very nicely together. Underneath "The Fratellis" and "The Wombats" there are cover lines that would attract the "Indie" audience because both bands are associated with the music and the stereotype and the quotes are associated with gossip/new things and so grabs the audiences attention for knowing secrets and the newest gossip. There is a part underneath "New Music From" for this part I used a font that looks like typed labels and I thought that it would attract the audience because its different to the rest of the typography used on the page. I also chose four well known bands that fall into the Indie stereotype so they will attract the audience too. The image that I have used for my front cover is a medium close up and I decided to use a black and white image to get away from the whole glossy magazine look. The image being black and white gives it a low tech feel and the image definitely shows the sub cultural identity of the stereotype of "Indie", I edited the image by blurring out the background to really focus on the model, I also edited the brightness and contrast and smoothed out the skin. As we move down the cover there is a large font/graphic that says "Megan" which is the cover stars name and the effects around it are sketchy and have have random graphics and it works really well within the cover style, underneath this I have added in a tag line "The Hottest new music act of 2009!" this is to intrigue the reader about the new star and generate more attention to her. The very last thing on the front cover which is left is the bar code which is a basic convention of a magazine and this also shows that the magazine is sold monthly rather than weekly. If the magazine was sold weekly then there would be less sales and less information but whereas a monthly magazine would produce more sales at a low price. The next finished product is my contents page I have used the same colour scheme of black, white and pink which has been identified as the house style for this magazine. I added the masthead into the contents page because its a basic convention. I changed the masthead to a bright pink colour to really catch the audiences eye and also the black against the pink connotes punkiness which kind of fits in with my stereotype, I then went on to write the word contents in a font that represents youth/childhood because it looks like cut out letters from magazines and books like you would do to make scrap books etc at a young age but I also used this font because it has quite a rebelistic style because it isn't a standard usual font. The font gives out it's own stylistic qualities in comparison to the magazine genre. I added a stroke around the the text titles on the coloured squares; black on white and pink on black to make it stand out a bit more and so that it doesn't get lost in the page as there is a lot going on. The contents page is split into coloured squares to put my different article types in because it really breaks the page up and even though it looks quite ordered. Making it off center gives it the style that fits in quite well with my theme. I decided to give the page numbers and article names a kind of column look as it is easy to find certain articles, it's easy to read and is neatly laid out so it doesn't confuse the audience at all. I added a scissor graphic in to connect with the cut out letter typography I have used to title the different types of article. It's quite an odd graphic to have on a contents page but I think it gives it a nice effect. I added in page references onto the photographs this is to give you a sneak peak of the photographs used and to also give an insight on what the article might be like, the page references save the audiences time by showing what page the featured articles are on. I made all of the contents page images black and white which gets away from the glossy magazine feel and makes it appear more low-tech. These images also hold the connection and theme with the front cover and the double page spread. All the photos used have models in them that are connected to the Indie stereotype and I blurred out the backgrounds of my images to make my artists/stars really stand out and grab your attention. I added in a page number because this is also another convention of a magazine and I wanted it to appear as real as possible. The final finished product is my double page spread, starting at the very top of the left page I added a masthead of "New Talent" this was to show that the star is new and very talented and grabs the audiences attention with the large bold font and exclamation mark, next I added in a by line to show who the article is by and I also added in a little sneak peak of what the interviewer and star are talking about and the part of "London's hottest new artist" makes her appear really famous. Next we are onto the article space itself; I added in a drop cap because it is an obvious convention with magazine articles and I wanted my article to appear as if it is a real magazine. I made the very first line of the article a bigger font to the rest to grab the audiences attention and to give it a good starting point. The gutters on my double page spread are close together which would connote that it is busy but I personally feel that it looks quite sophisticated and neat. I made sure that all of the columns were the same size so that they were not out of place and didn't look odd at all. I decided to use sub headings to break up the sections of the article. This was to make it not look as cluttered and overpowering as it might do for the audience. I added pull quotes that would attract the readers attention and interest them. The quotes I used were quite gossipy or had an insight into who the star is and what she is like. I added in a page number again to again because it is a basic convention and I want to make the magazine appear real. I added in an end sign which is a V this is to establish the connection with Versatile magazine and to show that the article ends on this page. Onto the other side of the magazine, there is an image which is a close up of the star and the fact she has her hand over her mouth connotes that she has secrets or could even connote that she has let her secrets slip and her hand is over her mouth in shock this particular picture would attract the audience because they want to know her secrets. I decided to use 3 smaller photos next to the large image and box them in white white sections to create a kind of photo booth line of photographs which I think gives quite a personal feel. The top image is like a high angled close up which could possibly connote a venerability of the star. The middle image, this is a medium long shot and shows the star in a kind of cheeky fun pose. This could connote that the star likes having a good time and is fun. The third and final bottom image, this is a kind of medium/close up at a slight low angle and she is looking right into the audiences eye line which gives the image quite a personal effect.
Evaluation: Representation
The main magazine image doesn't really connote any type of rebellion at all really as it is just of a singer standing looking into the camera. I have mainly concentrated on Indie kids but the magazine could also be approached to by other stereotypical sub-cultural groups. I mainly centered the magazine around males as this gender was the highest counted when I did my research. The magazine doesn't really give assumptions about who is "allowed" in and excluded from the magazine so I guess that it imposes the limitations of who the magazine is aimed at but the style of the magazine will be unlikely to be picked up by a 10 year old girl who loves pop music and pretty boy bands.I don't really think the one male image I have is very masculine but the way the male is standing is quite masculine, he is standing tall looking into the camera which can come across as quite dominating, but there is a shyness or even a "not bothered" look to the image because he has his hands in his pockets. The female images I have are mainly of one person as I wanted to be continuous with my main article, most of these images show the kind of "myspace" pose where you are looking into the lense and the camera is at a high angle or your face take up most of the image but I did take other shots to get away from the same types of angles, the female images represent youth and fun because she is a young girl and the poses she pulled were quite fun whereas some were quite serious. I think the images I've taken actually fit well in with the stereotype of "Indie" with the magazine being aimed at 16 - 20 year old guys I have used images of women more so than men to entice them to read because the majority of red blooded males interests are around girls and sex. The models in the images I have used look a mixture of Indie/Emo/Scene kids so this will appeal well to the stereotype I have chosen to target and I have given the magazine a fun loving but sophisticated look so that it appeals to their youth but is still good looking rather than something somebody has thrown together on paint.
I have taken care not to represent youth in an irresponsible way, for example I would only use a drugs article in a magazine to show the dangers and risks of using drugs but if you did put an article about drugs to heavy metal fans it would probably be glamorised as so many heavy metal stars take drugs and their fans look up to them and want to be like them because they see it as being "hardcore" so I think in someways it really would reinforce the stereotype but some people are pressured into drug taking because of their idols using drugs etc but if it was written in the right way I suppose it would explore the reality of the subculture.

Evaluation: Institution
I would choose Bauer as my magazines publisher because through research I have learnt that they are the largest privately owned publisher in Europe and have dealt with many music magazines over the years and also are the publishers of Kerrang! which is a really successful music magazine that is brought by thousands of teenagers interested in rock, heavy metal etc. Before going into business with a large company or deciding on self publishing you can look at media kits and rate cards to find out advertising income etc. The pros of going into business with a large company would be that they could create a large amount of income from advertising and would also have deals with companies such as WH Smiths and also high sales rates because they are well known, they are successful and they would be able to get a lot of advertising for the magazine. The cons of going with a large company would be that they need to approve certain things before they can be published, they can refuse to publish certain stories and pictures and they can also take a larger percentage of credit and magazine sales and they might make you pay a lot of attention to advertisers rather than the audience.
Evaluation: Target audience
My music magazine represents a particular social group well it's more of a sub-cultural identity called "Indie kids". The demographics of this group are mainly male aged from 16 to 20 years old with a social status of groups C1, C2 and B but mainly students and as for race I would generally say it is aimed at a minority of white people near cities. The psychographics of this particular group of people are mainly individuals, the lifestyles they lead are: living with parents, single or in a relationship and they either do not work or have a part time job, spend most of their time going to gigs or buying tickets to go to gigs, buying clothes and shoes, downloading music to their iPod's etc. The target audience for my product has been predominantly male but can be approached by females with an age range of 16 - 20 year olds. The audience will still be living with parents or possible moved out/ at uni etc , will be either single or in a relationship and have no children. The audience would be mostly interested in concert tickets, mobile phones, clothes, hair products (as every indie kid has great hair), possibly games consoles, guitars / musical instruments. The brands that they would know of would more than likely be converse, vans, topman/topshop, Sony Ericsson/LG/Nokia/Blackberry , Apple - iPod, iPhone. They would listen to bands such as The Killers,Bring me the horizon and The Wombats.
Evaluation: Addressing my audience
I chose to address my "Indie" audience by using lots of black against bright colours and I even used just plain black and white for images and my double page spread layout. This was to give the audience a sense of fun with the bright colours but still sophisticated with the black and white images which can also be shown as low tech so that it isn't trying to be a glossy magazine. I didn't really use many graphics as I didn't want the layout to look messy and unorganised so the graphics I did use I made sure that they fit in with the magazine's "look" and that they were placed where they wouldn't look wrong or messy this would attract the audience because it looks a lot more sophisticated and without appearing to "glossy" it appears more professional. The Indie genre is quite a new thing in terms of sub-culture groups so I was worried that the older viewers wouldn't be too interested in hearing about up coming indie bands and that they would have their own favourite bands and be set in their ways when it came down to music but I thought that if I made the magazine interesting enough that they would become interested and want to read it. The language that I have used for my media product is to keep the sense young and understandable without patronising the audience but so that I didn't confuse them either as this would ensure that they didn't buy another copy and that they would definitely not give out good reviews of the magazine. I decided to make my double page spread into more of a question and answer interview to keep the audience interested and attract them to reading it more whereas some magazines write a kind of biography of events which can get boring and make you want to turn the page. I wanted an article that was easy to read but not as if it was aimed at a very young audience of around 10 years old. The front cover text is bold and understandable and the contents page is nicely set out and easy to read without being overlapped and messy this would be good for the audience because I didn't want them to be confused and unable to read it. The cover lines of the front cover really grab the audiences attention because they feature information about their favourite bands and give a sense of mystery with the tag lines which makes them want to read inside to find out more. The content of the magazine on the double page spread is an interview with a new artist who has become really famous in a short amount of time and there is a small introduction about her and then a question and answer interview which gives the reader a bit of an insight to who she is. The photo's I have used: The front cover image has been photoshopped so that the artist really stands out from her background which gives the focus right on her. The contents page: The top right image of the girl is quite a standard image with no major editing apart from desaturation, the image focuses mainly on the face. The male image also has just been desaturated and connotes a dominating stance in the picture as he is standing tall looking into the camera and the bottom image of the girl has also been desaturated and this also focuses on the face. The double page spread images: A big image of the girl, focused on the face and the girl has a hand over her mouth which could connote mystery, something to hide, or that she has just let a secret out and has put her hand to her mouth in shock this would attract the audience because they want to know her secrets, there are two other images both focused on the face and the middle image is a full body shot where she looks like she is having fun. All of the images would entice and attract the reader as they all have the same style as the readers style and they all look quite chic and edgy which gives them all some depth.
Evaluation: Technologies
I have learnt a lot about technologies from the construction of the magazine. When I was taking the photos I had to make sure that hey all had the correct lighting so they weren't too bright or too dark but when I did come across a dark image I lightened it in photoshop using the contrast and brightness tool. I didn't really use props in my images apart from the clothing I made sure all the models had suitable clothing which would tie in with the stereotypical "Indie" style. The models I used in my photographs I also had to make sure that they had the right "look" about them because there was no point in me putting a picture of a chav in a Indie magazine because it just doesn't go with the stereotypical style. I did a lot of planning for my photographs because I really wanted them to fit in with the theme of my magazine so I actually left them until last because I didn't want to take photographs before I designed my magazine so that I would have to fit a style around them. I managed my time really well and even had time to try out different types of layout, colours on the front cover and contents page. I looked at other music magazines and studied how they had composed certain aspects of their magazines so that I wasn't placing things wrongly and out of place so when I made my cover I put a large photo on with the masthead across the top with a little tag line underneath and a graphic with the price on and cover lines down the left hand side with a big graphics of the cover persons name and a tag line about them, the bar code is on the right bottom hand corner so that the image can be seen clearly. The main photo has been edited so that the background is blurry and the artist is more focused on, the skin has been smoothed and on the colour version of the image I have even made her eye colour stand out more. The contents page has been given a brighter vibe with three boxes filled with the contents and numbers and they all have their own titles with an unusual "punk" like font. There is a graphic of a pair of scissors and a cut along line going around the page and there are 3 images with little tag lines which tell you what page they are featured on. The double page spread was the hardest to do as I became really annoyed with the columns of text not being exactly in line, personal preference but it really bugged me. I placed large title of "New Talent" in the top left corner with a little "who by" bit underneath, the image has a white border running around the edge and down the side of the large image. To the left of the large image there are 3 smaller images this is to make it look like photo booth line of images. All the images are black and white which gives it quite a nice feel.
Evaluation: Development of Skills and Understanding
I think from the preliminary task I have learnt a lot. I now understand that you need certain types of models and composition to actually make your magazine fit into a certain theme or stereotype and you really need to plan your design well ahead and even have a few different designs to come up with a perfect design that will appeal to your audience and you need a certain type of article to keep the readers interested and actually want to buy the magazine. I learnt that you really need to do research such as questionnaires to get feedback from the audience who you are making the magazine for to know what they want in a magazine and what they like. I learnt that you need to do a lot of research about existing magazines and articles to truly find out what type of article, photos, graphics, colours and layout will interest the readers. You really need to be able to use programmes like photoshop and have the sense of good camera skills to be able to edit the photos in certain ways and produce different types of graphics and you will also need to take decent photos at certain angles to fit in with the magazine style. It really helps to get feedback from other people on what they think of your designs because if they don't like them then your audience probably wont either. When you do a project like this you really need attention to detail because small little things like spelling mistakes, pixelated photos and graphics, bad composition can be reasons for you audience not wanting to by the product again and can really make you appear unprofessional. The written part of the product, the double page spread really needs a lot of planning and time management because you need a draft of what your going to write and it needs to be interesting and not boring because this will make the audience not want to read it anymore.

My Final Products - Alternative Discarded Versions
This is the coloured version of my front cover that I produced. I like the way it turned out because all the colours really tie in together and the image really stands out. I decided not to use this version because it just didn't look right for the kind of cover I was trying to achieve and it looked a bit samey.

This is the double page contents page that I produced. As I wasn't entirely sure about my final contents page I decided to make another version just to try and attempt a completely different look about it. I decided not to use this version because to be honest it looks really plain and boring and there really isn't anything that jumps out at you.

Music Magazine Initial Ideas
After my music magazine research I decided on what kind of magazine I wanted to do and who my target audience would be. It took me quite a while to think about who I would like to aim my magazine at because I needed it to fit in with a certain popular stereotype so that I could base my designs and ideas on a particular style.
I thought of quite a few working titles which were Vibe and Baseline but when I figured out my target audience I wanted a unique and smart title which is when I decided on "Versatile".
The demographic status of my target audience:
Gender: Male but the magazine will be approachable to women.
Age: 16 - 20 years old
Marital status: Single / In a relationship but not married as the magazine is aimed at the younger audience.
Region: Near cities
Social Status: C1,C2,B - Mainly students.
The psychographic status of my target audience:
Music they listen to : Indie
Subcultural Alliance: Indie Kids, Emos, Scene Kids.
My target audience consumption habits:
Music Festival Tickets / Gig Tickets
Ipod's
Downloading music
Clothes / Shoes
They Wear:
Skinny Jeans
Shirts - Mainly Checkered
Cardigans
Polo Shirts
Plimsolls
High-Top Trainers / Converse
Hair Style: Short/Medium length, Layered, Side fringes.
My ideal price for my music magazine would be £2.00 and the release will be monthly this is because my target audience is students and they will not pay £2.00 a week for a music magazine. The price of £2.00 on monthly magazine sale will be more appealing making the demand higher and even with the cheap magazine price it will generate enough circulation income with people sharing magazines with friends.
The content of my magazine will mainly be new band exclusives, unsigned acts, reviews of gigs and new music, gig listings and artist interviews.
The style of my magazine will be quite an upmarket style. I would like to have quite a bright colour scheme on black E.g. Pink on black. I would like to make the magazine look anti-commercial but still leave it looking quite smart to draw attention. I would also like professional photo's of bands because unprofessional photo's will make the magazine sales decrease.
The unique selling point of my magazine is that it will be a magazine made and aimed at one stereotypical group but it will also be approachable by other stereotypical groups of people wanting to see the latest band exclusives, interviews and unsigned acts.

Planning My College Magazine
The research I undertook to make my magazine cover and contents pages were firstly analysing a magazine cover which you can see in my very first post I used the Flickr account that I created which was a lot easier that doing a spider diagram type thing by hand and for my contents page I actually looked at a contents page from That Life! magazine and took tips from that to make my final design. I did a target audience questionaire which gave me alot of help when deciding which elements and subjects to use when making my magazine cover and contents page and it also helped me to create a style which would be visually pleasing to the audience. I drew out my magazine cover before I started to actually make it on Photoshop but after I had taken my photograph the image kept developing so it hardly looked like my intial idea but im very pleased with the way that it turned out. The contents page wasnt too hard when it came to designing it because I looked at the Thats Life! contents page and took some designs from that but made it my own using different elements and effects.

Magazine Front Cover & Contents Page
Evaluation
The denotations of my front cover are :
- Black and white image
- Partial colour to the black and white image
- High contrast
- Bright font colour
- Bold font
- Bold curvy magazine masthead
- Cover lines
- Price of £1.00
- "The Number One College Magazine in the Uk"
The black and white image was a way for me to make the coloured headlines and subheadlines stand out I think I achieved this but with the effect that the image stands out alot in its own way the connotation of this is difference because its unusual to see black and white images on magazine covers.
The partial colour to the black and white image connotes style because even though it is a very simple photoshop edit it brings part of the front cover to life.
The high contrast of black and white image conotes dramatisation because theres are very high levels of black and white which is quite dramatic for any image let alone a magazine cover.
The bright font colour was an idea I had to appeal to the audience and please them visually this connotes happiness and positivity which is the the image that college wants to portray to its students.
The bold font on the front cover was put there the so that it is easy to read and conotes being plain and simple but not in a bad way this was put on the cover to give the the impression of what you see is what you get.
The bold curvy magazine masthead connotes being playful and fun which is quite a good impression I wanted to convey to the audience that the magazine isnt all about being serious.
The coverlines say things such as "College Party" and "Gossip" which connotes attention grabbing because all of the students want to see photos from the college party and read about shocking things that happend and the gossip aspect because gossiping is something that mainly teenagers do.
The price of £1.00 connotes cheapness which is good because students are known for not having alot of money and this price is good for the target audience.
"The Number One College Magazine in the Uk" connotes familiarity and good selling this is good because the students will know that it is a good magazine and the familiarity part is good because the students know what they will be getting.
The denotations of my contents page are:
- Bright colours
- Arrows
- College Pictures
- Page promises
- Competition page
The bright colours connote happiness which is a what I want the readers to feel when they read the magazine and what the college portrays to its students.
The arrows connote contemporary style which is a good way of making the the magazine look more stylish.
The college pictures connote real life because this way the students can relate to the pictures that appear on the page.
The page promises next to the page numbers connote familiarity this is because this is what the students wanted when we gave them questionnaires.
The competition page connotes wanting this is because when young people see an expensive item that they see they want it.
All of the denotations and connotations are acceptable to the target audience which is 16 - 19 year olds this being the main ages of college students; All of the points above are either pleasing to the students eyes or exactly what the students want which we discovered in the questionnaire we gave them.
I think that my front cover was very successful because I achieved the exact style and effect I wanted which was to look stylish, to stand out and to be pleasing to the eyes. I was pleased at how the image turned out and how even the fonts looked right on the cover and I was pleased that I managed to include little details such as barcodes, dates and prices.
I liked how my contents page turned out but it wasnt how I exactly wanted because I think it doesnt look as good as what the front cover does and kind of lets it down a bit so I think the style aspect of the contents page was quite unsuccessful but I was pleased at how I made the contents page look exactly how the Thats Life! contents page looked.
I learnt alot when designing my products mainly I learnt quite alot within photoshop and I have developed my skills in that aspect and I learnt alot when producing them when it came to placing the images and setting the text in the right places where it wouldnt look messy or cluttered. I enjoyed doing this task as I love designing and was pleased that I learnt more skills and effects in photoshop and that when looking at something you can carry on developing ideas until they look stylish and well presented.
